Polk County Sheriff's Office gets a website!

The Polk County Sheriff's Office's website didn't need a "sprucing up", nor did they need new and interesting features added; they just plain needed a website. kiveo worked with PCSO to come up with a design that reflected a small town feel, but with all of the functionality of a "big city" site. A main goal expressed by the Sheriff's Office was the ability to easily share pertinent information with the citizens and visitors of Polk County in a manner that was easy for the staff to maintain as well as providing timely updates.

kiveo Back Story Contest

New contest!

Objective:

The proper noun 'kiveo' is a name we made up. It is pronounced kih-vee-oh (with a short i, long e, long o).  We need a grandiose backstory. Preferably something involving a grandparent, overcoming adversity and a dying Amazonian (or Papua-New Guinean) rain forest shaman's last wishes.  Ok, maybe that's shooting too high, but we'll take what we can get.

Tryon Daily Bulletin

kiveo was proud to be selected by the High Tech Housecall, local designer Thomas Oder, and Tryon Daily Bulletin team to re-vamp the "World's Smallest Daily Newspaper's" website. Working with the team of editors and staff from HTHC and Tryon Daily Bulletin, we believe we came up with a site that reflects the feel of the physical paper - originally pamphlet sized, and not much bigger today, and meets the end users needs.  The paper had this to say in an article published today:

A Little Subversion Diversion

When our good friend Darrin, also a contributor to NYTimes and Washington Post Editorials on money matters, came to us and said, "Hey, you know what would be fun? A site for people to let out their grievances about banks," we said, "Let's do this."

Facebook App: Free Stuff Daily

kiveo was chosen by the popular coupon and daily offers site Free Mania to provide them with a Facebook integration application called "Free Stuff Daily". Free Stuff Daily is an application which users install in their Facebook profile and receive daily updates of offers on free or extremely low priced products at well known national chains. An example would be their promotion of Arby's Free Food Wednesdays. Free Mania also has a Google Calendar component to help users remember upcoming specials and remember to take part in them. The Free Stuff Daily Application helps drive users to the main website to interact with the content -- hmm, sounds like a good idea. The results? Over 400 users (and growing) in the first week of deployment now have the app installed. The brand has a user base of over 2,300 fans, but at a conversion rate of 400 per week, it should only take 6 weeks to get all 2300 pairs of eyes on the application's content on a regular basis.

kurl.it Updates!

Wow!  Ok, folks - here's the low down: we (and by we, I mean Miles) have been working killer amounts on the feature set for kiveo's latest project kurl.it. And while we recognize that there was a roadmap all along, we also didn't put a few of the waypoints on the roadmap, like, uh, logging in.

Blaze Realty SEO Project Pays Off

Blaze Realty Group had a goal of being in the top ten Google results, specifically for their rentals division. We took a simple tact with their website (because their rankings were so low - usually pages 8-10); we went back and looked at the overall page structure (Google loves the symantic web!), and found that what the site's designer was telling search engines (structurally) was completely counterintuitive to what the design was expressing. After re-working the pages, adding a sitemap and working with Blaze to update their content more often, we've moved them into the top 10 for the following results (as of 8/13/2009):

A Tribe Called Joy Chooses kiveo

A Tribe Called Joy (http://www.atcj.org), a Somersworth, NH based 501(c)(3) non-profit, has chosen kiveo to provide implementation and ongoing maintenance services for their Social Engine (http://www.socialengine.net) based network, as well as their corporate site and Facebook application. kiveo is happy to have been chosen by Cherie Edris, the foundation's CEO and founder, to work on this project.  The Tribe [from website] "is a group of friends and family, coworkers and neighbors, both virtual and [in real life] who have come together believing that the whole can do more than the individual.  [Their] purpose is evolving now as we grow the Tribe and our direction comes clearer daily.  [They] are in process of creating a not-for-profit foundation, as well as an online application as a vehicle to create a source of revenue. [They] envision Tribe as being a hub of people, energy, and funds for registered charities as well as a social networking site for those involved." ATCJ's Social Engine implementation includes the Blog, Chat, Groups, Forums, Events, Classifieds, Albums and Videos mods from Social Engine, as well as a soon to be released custom mod from kiveo to allow the non-profit's game "Reciprocity" to be played in-site, as well as on Facebook.

New URL shortening service & API goes live

kiveo, LLC (http://www.kiveo.net) is excited to announce the Beta release of their new URL shortening service, kurl (http://www.kurl.it), and an API for easy integration into existing applications that make use of short URLs. The service is aimed at users wanting to provide short, human-readable URLs in stead of sometimes confusing longer URLs. An example case would be sharing website links with a friend on the phone. Say you stumble on a good deal at Urban Junkie's website and want to provide it to your friend. Rather than using the long URL (in this example: http://shopurbanjunkie.com/category-dresses-1/mai-tai-tube-dress-051809.html), or telling your friend the click path (click here, then there, then the other place...) you'd jump over to the kurl site and grab a shorter URL: http://kurl.it/pdg3sb.  This is an easy to read off URL that your friend can quickly type into their browser and see the same content as you, but with minimal effort expended on both sides.
